Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act Update

  • March 12, 2024

  • Lake Forest Community Center

Both State and Federal laws require health plans to provide treatment for mental health and substance use disorder conditions. The Department of Managed Health Care refers to treatment and services provided to treat mental health and substance use conditions as behavioral health care.

This presentation will focus on:

  •  The solution, not the problem.
  • Training on how to help, not simply data and information about mental health coverage and treatment problems.

DeDe will touch on the problems a bit but will equip agents and account managers to know what to:

  • Say, how to say it, what not to say.
  • Do, how to do it, what not to do.

Advocacy in mental health is intimidating when one doesn’t understand.

  • What the laws require.
  • What the health care delivery system entails and looks like.
  • What the consumer experience is.
  • What can advocacy influence and improve?

Agents that complete this course will have reviewed the Mental Health Parity legal environment and coverage requirements, become familiar with mental health levels of care, learned about how to access care, what the barriers to insurance funding for care are, and how to navigate authorizations and appeals.

Attendees will go away with confidence and competency to better equip themselves to advise and help.
